Auction Finds: A New Twist on Art Collecting, an author talk with Sherry L. Howard
Virtual
Cost: FREE
Sherry L. Howard will present an Arts Talk and Book Signing for her new book ART WITH HEART: How I Built a Sweet Collection by Buying Cheap at Auction. Sherry has been collecting art at auctions for years and writing about the artists and their works in her blog Auction Finds.
She built the collection by buying artwork for little money at mom-and-pop auction houses near where she lives. She started out buying African American art that spoke to her, but along the way, she became just as enamored with other artists. Her collection consists of many from the Philadelphia area – including Samuel J. Brown, Columbus Knox, Moe Brooker and Julius Bloch. Her aim was to give little-known and unknown artists a presence on the web, hoping to lift them out of obscurity.
Her book contains selections of stories from her blog and artworks from her collection. She writes about the joy of finding art at auction, the excitement and anxiety of bidding – sometimes winning, sometimes losing – and the lessons she learned.
