Black Luminaries Film Series | I Am Not Your Negro (2016)
Education Philosophy and Religion Department at Parkway Central Library
Join the Free Library of Philadelphia's Education, Philosophy, and Religion Department for a screening of Raoul Peck's 2016 film I Am Not Your Negro. This documentary and social critique rounds out James Baldwin's personal account of the assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr., based on his unfinished manuscript Remember This House. The film covers the history of racism in the United States as well as Baldwin's own examination of American history.
This event is free to the public. Please register for this event at https://i-am-not-your-negro-screening.eventbrite.com.
The screening will take place in Room 108, on the 1st floor of the Parkway Central Library, accessible through the Wood Street entrance behind the building. Since this event takes place after the Library's regular hours, you will not be able to enter through the main entrance. Please use the Wood Street entrance at the back of the building.
This film is the first in our two-part Summer Film Series. Come along with us this summer as we alternate between two film programs: In Black Luminaries we are showing films about writers and scholars of color who were influenced by philosophy, psychology, and religion and had a significant impact on, while not always being regarded as primary contributors to, these fields. In Bad Habits we will show a triptych of international films from multiple decades that examine the lives and passions of nuns as they wrestle with their faith, femininity, and identities.
