Designing Philadelphia: Julian Abele's Architectural Gems
Parkway Central Library
Julian Abele (1881-1950), a Black Philadelphian Architect, designed landmarks that have enriched life in Philadelphia and shaped its personality for almost a century. His Beaux-Arts style design for the Parkway Central Library provides a dignified and functional space for Philadelphians to access information and enrichment, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art is arguably the city’s most iconic cultural institution. Yet Abele is not well known in his hometown, nor is it widely recognized that the treasured buildings he created reflect the vision and ethos of a Black artist and designer. In this program we'll get acquainted with this essential Philadelphia and learn where to encounter his work here in Philadelphia and beyond. Program will be held in Room 131/132 in the Heim Center.
