Barbara A. Grant - Power Politics, an oral history series organized by Scribe Video Center, showcases the voices and strategies of organizers, activists, and leaders from Black, Puerto Rican, Asian American, and other marginalized communities. These interviews, conducted by high school and college students trained in oral history and documentary techniques, highlight the resilience and ingenuity of historically disenfranchised communities striving for political empowerment.
In a 35+ year career, Barbara Grant has been a journalist and strategic communications professional serving clients who need public relations, marketing and media strategies, advertising, video production and community outreach to multicultural audiences. She is an award-winning journalist who has served as Director of Communications to the Mayor of Philadelphia (2000-2004) and the Superintendent of the Philadelphia School District (1996-1999).
She is a well-recognized broadcast journalist and producer (The 10 O’Clock news-Ch 29; Inquirer News Tonight-Ch 17; WDAS radio), who has received several Emmy Award nominations and earned an RTNDA Award. She won the Best of Philly award for TV journalists in 1993 from Philadelphia Magazine. In 2015, she was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists. Her political reporting and strategic communications strategies have spanned local elections and administrations from Wilson Goode to Jim Kenney.
Grant is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she majored in Sociology; she earned a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce with a specialty in marketing and advertising.
