"Rebellion" in New Jersey. Carlstadt, N.J...A policeman at a barrier turns traffic aside at Hoboken Road and Paterson Avenue in Carlstadt, one of three New Jersey towns which tangled with the state in the battle of Route 17. In answer to the State's action Monday in shutting Route 17 for a much needed widening, Carlstadt, along with Hasbrouck Heights and Woodridge, closed their once-quiet, tree-lined streets to traffic being detoured around the four-mile.
Stretch of Route 17 slated for repairs. Apprised of a resulting traffic snarl, state highway commissioner Spencer Miller, Jr. called a conference for today between the Route 17 widening firm and mayors of the towns. May, 27th, 1948.
