Camel Trophy 1981 offered 10 Germans the opportunity to wrestle four-wheel-drive Range Rovers through the jungles and along the back roads of Sumatra. The unique off-road competition was so popular in Germany-- over 300,000 men and women applied as competitiors--that R.J. Reynolds Tobacco International decided to add teams from Holland, Italy and the United States to drive in Camel Trophy 1982 in the dense highland country of Papua New Guinea.
