The new American Motors Matador D/L Coupe showed outstanding handling characteristics in its first NASCAR Grand National race of the 1974 season at Riverside, California. Driver Gary Bettenhausen, also making his first appearance of the year in a stock car event, drove to a respectable seventh place finish.
