Over the course of eight collections of poetry, four books of criticism, and the long-running “Poet’s Choice” column in the Washington Post, Edward Hirsch has cemented his reputation as an attentive reader and an elegant poet, capturing what the Romantic poets called “the true voice of feeling.” His many honors include the National Book Critics Circle Award, a MacArthur prize, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the Rome Prize, a Pablo Neruda Presidential Medal of Honor, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature. He serves as president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. His new book is a compilation of thoughtful definitions for important poetic vocabulary, imbued with his contagious love for the art and a lifetime of scholarship.
