Michael Graves was instrumental in the emergence of postmodernism in the mid-1970s. His classic and colorful buildings are intended to make contemporary architecture more meaningful and accessible, referring to past tradition while responding to contemporary surroundings. In 1960 as a recipient of the prestigious Prix de Rome, Graves traveled throughout Europe and the Levant, studying and recording the masterworks of architecture.
