Born in Saint Lucia in 1930, Derek Walcott is the author of more than twenty collections of poems and plays, and is the 1992 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. At 18, he made his debut with 25 Poems, and in 1959, founded the Trinidad Theatre Workshop, which produced many of his early plays. His work is deeply rooted in Caribbean society with its cultural fusion of African, Asiatic and European elements.
