2004 Borrowers Ball Enchants with "Once Upon a Time"

The Free Library of Philadelphia's 11th annual Borrowers Ball will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2004. The theme of the event this year is "Once Upon a Time," and will delight guests with an evening straight out of their favorite fairy tales as the Central Library, 1901 Vine Street, is transformed into a mystical, magical land of dreams. Princesses and princes, fair maidens and shining knights will arrive at 6 p.m.

It is estimated that 400 people will attend this year's Borrowers Ball, which will include two auctions, one silent and one live. Among the items slated for the auction are: luxury outerwear from Jacques Ferber Furs; four club box seats to a 76ers basketball game; five nights in a private lakefront vacation home in Nice, California; and a place in literary history as a "dysfunctional character" in Peter Watts' upcoming sci-fi novel Blindsight. Plus, sports extravaganzas to find your inner hero, romantic getaways to reacquaint you with Prince Charming's charms, spa packages to find your Sleeping Beauty, and jewelry fit for a queen.

Additionally, over twenty authors will enjoy the evening with the guests. They include Chuck Stone, Donna Jo Napoli, Deborah Kogan Ray, Diane McKinney Whetstone, and Ken Kalfus.

New to the 2004 Borrowers Ball is the Online Auction, which can be found through the Free Library of Philadelphia's web site by clicking on "Borrowers Ball 2004," and then on "Online Auction," or entering in your address bar. There are currently 29 fairy tale items available for bid on the site, including magical weekends, jewelry, literary memorabilia, and signed sports keepsakes.

The Borrowers Ball raises funds for the Free Library's programming, and benefits branch libraries all over the city, providing after school programs, adult education workshops, author events, and more, making attendees Fairy Godmothers to Free Library patrons.
