Central Library Project Presentation at the Friends of the Independence Branch Library's General Meeting

Where: The Independence Branch Community Room, 18 S. 7th Street.
Why:

The Friends of the Independence Branch Library General Meeting will feature a special talk by Elliot Shelkrot, President and Director of the Free Library of Philadelphia. Shelkrot will conduct a Powerpoint presentation highlighting the new design for the Central Library Project, which was conceived of by internationally renowned architect, Moshe Safdie.

The Central Library Project will include the renovation of Central's landmark Beaux Arts building, the addition of 160,000 square feet of space, a new Business, Science and Technology Department, 300 new computers with two Internet browsing centers, a new Department of Visual and Performing Arts, a new Teen Center and Children's Department, and a new auditorium seating 600 in a state-of-the-art facility. Moshe Safdie-- former Director of the Urban Design program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design--won critical accolades for his Vancouver Library Square and recently completed the Salt Lake City Public Library.

The Friends of the Independence Branch is a member of the Friends of the Free Library of Philadelphia, an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to support the Free Library of Philadelphia through community volunteers consisting of library patrons and civic leaders.
