Gambling: A Good Bet for Philadelphia?

Talk About It! @ the Free Library

What: The second installment of Talk About It! @ the Central Library, a public talk/debate series on timely current events, tackles the issue of gambling in Philadelphia.

Who: Linda Wright Moore, journalist, Dr. Bryant Simon, Professor of History at Temple University and author of Boardwalk of Dreams: Atlantic City and the Fate of Urban America, Pat Gillespie, Business Manager for the Philadelphia Building and Construction Trades Council, Shawn Fordham, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Gaming Advisory Task Force, and David S., representative of Gamblers Anonymous

When: Wednesday, April 19 at 7:00 p.m.

Where: Central Library 19th and Vine

Why:

Is gambling a good bet for Philadelphia? This is the question up for discussion at the Library’s second Talk About It! @ the Central Library-a new series of current debate sessions. This dialogue will tackle the topic of casinos and how they might change life in this “City of Neighborhoods.” Proponents say slots will bring millions of dollars and thousands of jobs to Philadelphia; opponents cite every evil from gambling addiction to traffic headaches as reasons to decry the proposed gaming venues. Moderated by journalist Linda Wright Moore, this is guaranteed to be a lively conversation about an issue that is grabbing headlines and attention.

This discussion program is another step in the transformation of the Central Branch of the Free Library into a dynamic, technology-driven information resource for our region. It will be an opportunity for members of our community with divergent viewpoints to come together and engage in healthy, lively debate over the subjects making big headlines. We’ll have experts on hand to inform the dialogue and give people plenty of time to ask questions and share their opinions.

The next Talk About It! program will address the issue of youth violence. There will be opportunities in the future for people to let the Library know which subjects they would like to discuss.
