Philly Plays Scrabble® 2007 To Kick Off With Mayoral Wordplay

What’s an eight-letter word meaning fun for everyone from nine to 90? Scrabble®! On September 27, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Central Library on the Parkway, After School Activities Partnerships (ASAP) and the Free Library of Philadelphia will kick off the 2007 Philly Plays Scrabble® program with an event featuring mayoral candidates Michael Nutter and Al Taubenberger facing off in a game of wordplay.
Philly Plays Scrabble® was initiated in 2006 by After School Activities Partnerships (ASAP) and the Free Library of Philadelphia, in conjunction with the National Scrabble® Association. The program promotes literacy and helps to develop vocabulary, math, and spelling skills among adults, teens, and children. In addition to all that--it’s fun! Last year, over one thousand people took part in Philly Plays Scrabble®. This October, 17 Free Library locations throughout Philadelphia will have designated hours for Scrabble® play. Competitive players will advance through tournament rounds with a final event held at the Central Library in November.
Program sponsors include Comcast, Knight Foundation, PNC, Verizon, Hasbro, and the National Scrabble® Association.
During the entire month of October, the following Free Library locations will have special hours for Scrabble® competition. No pre-registration necessary--Scrabble® sets and score sheets will be provided.
