The Free Library of Philadelphia Presents New Exhibition: We Are What We Eat

PHILADELPHIA – The Free Library of Philadelphia is proud to announce its new exhibition from the Special Collection Division entitled: We Are What We Eat. The exhibition explores the intersection of food, community, and identity.

“Food can transcend the boundaries of language and geography,” said Kelly Richards, President and Director of the Free Library of Philadelphia. “We are excited to provide visitors the opportunity to experience food through a historical, cultural, and artistic lens.”

Patrons will explore how food is not just a substance to sustain our bodies, but a reflection of values and beliefs, a form of self-expression, and a means to draw connections between communities and cultures.

The exhibit will display cookbooks, recipes, artwork, and specially curated items from the Free Library's Rare Book Department, Print and Picture Collection, Map Collection, Children's Literature Research Collection, and Sheet Music Collection.

“I decided to do this show because food is universal. We all have a relationship with food and delving into how those relationships can manifest felt like a good window to explore our special collections,” said Karin Suni, the exhibition's Curator. “Whether through the gallery space or programming, I hope people will walk away from the exhibition with an appreciation for the myriad ways that food and our connections to it can be expressed through art, books, and manuscripts.”

We Are What We Eat is located on the Third Floor of the Parkway Central Library in the Dietrich Gallery and is open beginning today, Monday, April 1, 2024, through Saturday, August 31, 2024. Admission is free.
