Free Library of Philadelphia Adds Video Games for Lending
PHILADELPHIA – The Free Library of Philadelphia announced a new addition to its vast catalog of borrowable materials: video games. All 54 branches now have selections for children, teens, and adults.
"We are delighted to introduce an impressive collection of video games to Philadelphia communities,” said Kelly Richards, President and Director of the Free Library of Philadelphia. “In today's digital age, video games offer a unique opportunity for learning and social interaction by fostering creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration among our patrons."
Through intricate narratives, character development, and immersive world-building, studies show video games help foster literacy skills by engaging players in critical thinking, problem-solving, and comprehension skills.
“Playing video games is a gateway for young people into reading and writing,” said Kris Langlais, AV Materials Selector in Materials Management and Head Selector for the Video Game Collection. “Young people who play video games are likely to read material related to the games they enjoy. We hope that by offering video games for the community to borrow, people will find interest in relevant books and become regular library patrons.”
Library card holders can borrow up to three games for up to three weeks. Games are compatible with PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and X, and the Nintendo Switch consoles.
