As someone who not-so-patiently awaits the arrival of fall every year, I’m elated that today is the autumnal equinox. This wonderful first day of fall is one of my favorite holidays. It ushers in all things cozy: apple cider, crunchy leaves, hayrides, and that cool, crisp air I’ve been waiting for all year! Since we still have a few more days of summer warmth before we get to enjoy those cool breezes, here are a few ways the Free Library can help you get in an autumnal mood while you wait for sweater and cozy blanket weather.
Football, a quintessential fall activity that can be enjoyed no matter the temperature. Whether you’re brushing up on your Birds knowledge with these Eagles reads, living vicariously through the true story of Vince Papale by watching Invincible, or making everyone’s favorite Sunday dessert with this football-shaped cake pan, you’re bound to feel like fall has arrived.
Baking is to fall what ice cream is to summer, especially if you’re using harvest ingredients like apples and pumpkins. If your skill in the kitchen is already honed, check out America’s Best Harvest Pies or the Pumpkin Pie Spice Cookbook for new recipe ideas to have your house smelling like harvest and cinnamon. For those who need a helping hand, try one of these cooking and nutrition classes near you.
Though it might be a little warm still, the leaves are already changing, which makes an afternoon hike (or walk!) the perfect way to celebrate fall while appreciating these last few days of summer sun. The Free Library can help you out with books on hiking in the area and we even have hiking backpacks at Andorra Library, which help make the experience fun for the whole family.
If you’re all hiked out and looking for more relaxing ways to celebrate, you’re in luck! The first day of fall also marks the return of many primetime TV shows, including some favorites starting their last seasons. Catch up on Empire, Modern Family, The Good Place, and How to Get Away with Murder before they end for good.
While it might not be cool enough to wear your favorite sweater or scarf yet, that means there’s still time to knit a new one! Join one of these knitting or crocheting groups at a neighborhood library near you and craft yourself that perfect beanie while making new friends.
Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of fall with some classic movies like It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, Fly Away Home, or October Sky.
If all else fails, these books about autumn are sure to put you and your kids in the harvest spirit!
