RSS - Let Information Come to You

By Camille T. RSS Thu, July 22, 2010

RSS--which stands for Really Simple Syndication--is a web format that allows data from frequently updated works, like blog entries, news headlines, and audio and video content to be viewed in a standardized format. If you are like me, you are probably a fan of many blogs, podcasts, and news websites, but sometimes you don't have the time to visit all those websites to keep up to date with their content. That's where RSS comes in!

RSS allows all the content from your favorite websites to come to you. If you subscribe to an RSS feed, whenever that website, blog, or podcast is updated, you will see the new content in your RSS reader. Check out this video from Common Craft which explains RSS in plain English:

The Free Library has many RSS feeds to which you can subscribe:

  • Our Blog - You're looking at it! The Free Library's blog is written by a variety of staff members on a multitude of topics.
  • Author Events - Find out which authors will be visiting the library soon.
  • Podcasts - Missed an author event? You can listen to it on your computer or download it to your mp3 player!
  • Build a Custom RSS Feed - Only want to view upcoming events at your local branch? Or just events for adults? You can customize the Free Library's RSS feeds to your interests!

Have a question for Free Library staff? Please submit it to our Ask a Librarian page and receive a response within two business days.
