On Sunday March 24th, Bassoonist Raymundo Jacinto and the Parkway Central’s Music Department introduced the first experiment in what we hope will become a series of monthly readings and performances from the chamber music repertoire. For some brief highlights and to hear from Ray about this program, please enjoy this brief video:
The Free Library of Philadelphia invites local musicians to read from music discovered in our Chamber Music Collection. This circulating collection of individual parts from around 30,000 works of the chamber repertoire serves ensembles ranging between 1 and 10 instruments. Musicians interested in participating should contact the Music Department for information on finding and taking home works from our collection to prepare for future readings:
The second reading in this series will be Sunday April 21st from 2 - 3 p.m. in room 108 next to the Home Page Cafe inside the Parkway Central Library. We hope to see you there.
I think it's thrilling to have more music available to the public. Keep up the good work.
I also appreciate having the opportunity to watch the performance. Could you make available the whole April 21 reading for streaming and download?
Now If I could just get a new (non-expired!) library card.

Linda, thank you for the encouragement! We certainly have the technology and the know how to present full programs, however the unfortunate complexities of copyright law limit us somewhat in this regard. This reading series is very much an educational program for musicians and the public. It's a chance to exchange ideas and explore the literature of printed music within the learning space of the library. We encourage you come to the next reading on Sunday April 21st to participate in this unfolding learning process. But in the mean time, if you'd like to stream music, here's a clarinetist performing Wilson Osborne's Rhapsody, which Ray played selections from on Bassoon in the last reading...
You'll need your library card and PIN number to access this database if you're not at the library. Just login to Music Online at:
Then enter Card Number and PIN when prompted. You can search for Osborne Rhapsody for Clarinet or click the longer link above.

I had the pleasure of playing with Ray Jacinto on Sunday, April 21st, 2013 at the Central Library, Room 108. Because of limited rehearsal time we could only present one of the pieces that we had prepared; the "Petite Suite" by Franco Dominutti published in 1984 for oboe and bassoon. I played the oboe part on flute. Attendance was light because of the many activities going on in town that Sunday afternoon but we had a small group of very appreciative listeners. This could be a great way to network with other musicians that are interested in playing obscure works that are hidden in the library's chamber music collection. Hopefully the library will provide a dedicated rehearsal space sometime in the near future which would make preparation of music for live performance much easier and encourage musicians to make use of the chamber music collection.
