Add to the all of this the continual squeeze on state and local funding. Libraries rarely top the list of legislators’ priorities. A few years ago, the Pennsylvania legislature nearly voted to close the Free Library of Philadelphia. You can almost hear Benjamin Franklin crying in shame.

But as its library expanded, became a part of the Free Library of Philadelphia, and began circulating to orchestras, the need to look beyond purely instrumental works increased.

It's nice to see library systems like Chattanooga's expanding their mission to adapt to the 21st century. Looking forward to seeing the same transformations take place here in Philadelphia and elsewhere.
