Science in the Summer has begun!

On June 28th and 29th, kids at the Oak Lane Library enjoyed two full days of free programming focused on science and hands-on learning.

Since this year’s theme is Bioscience—the study of living things—students learned all about bacteria, plant cells, and animal cells. Instructor Tiene Myers demonstrated how bacteria can be transferred from one hand to another, explained how plant cells are structured, and talked about differences among the cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscle cells of animals. As part of the hands-on experience that Science in the Summer promotes, everyone in attendance got to use a microscope to examine cells and a glow-in-the-dark Glo Germ Gel to see bacteria transfer.

Happening at 26 Free Library locations across Philadelphia, Science in the Summer gets elementary school kids excited about science with hands-on experiments in Physical Science and Electricity, Genetics, Oceanography, Chemistry, Simple Machines, and Bioscience. The program offers two age-specific sessions per day in two-day workshops throughout the summer.
