Sunday Literacy Program Year In Review!

By Elizabeth K. RSS Wed, May 31, 2017

On Sunday, May 21, the Free Library’s Sunday Literacy Program ended its pilot year with a Family Celebration program at the eleven libraries hosting Sunday Literacy. At the Family Celebration, the participating children were recognized for their hard work this year and their caregivers were given tips for continuing the progress over the summer.

The Sunday Literacy Program teachers did a storytime for the children while demonstrating some techniques for parents to use to enhance an at home read aloud. Additionally, parents and children were then given the opportunity to read aloud to each other afterward.

Children were also invited to make and decorate a journal to use over the summer, as well as making story cubes with questions to guide discussions or journal entries.

After all of this, the families enjoyed a meal together and the participants received certificates for their work. They also were given drawstring backpacks with pencils and folders with resources for the summer.

It was a fun day to end a successful year. Keep an eye out for this program to return in the Fall!
