Eastwick Library is excited to announce our new Family Fun Literacy Backpacks. Our backpacks are a pilot program selected by the Library’s Strategic Initiatives Office to support the City of Philadelphia’s citywide Read by 4th initiative. Read by 4th works hard to help children read at grade level by the 4th grade. The eight different backpacks are literacy focused and have great educational themes. The Family Fun Literacy Backpacks which include Sight Words, Tell Me a Story, Word Families, Science: Weather, Alphabet, Fairy and Folktales, Math, and Science: Eggs have books and activities for adults to do together with children that match the theme of the backpack.
Science: Eggs is our most popular backpack and the Alphabet backpack is a favorite with preschoolers. Word Families and Sight Words backpacks build beginning reading skills. Children get to read classic tales like Anansi Goes Fishing and fun fairytale twists like The Gingerbread Cowboy in the Fairy and Folktales backpack. Coin counting and tally math are featured in our very popular Math backpack. The Science: Weather backpack builds important non-fiction literacy skills and has a cool Weather Fun Facts ring book. Tell Me a Story works with comprehension and story elements.
The backpacks are popular and adults and children describe them as fun. Adults say the backpacks have helped their child’s literacy and children say they have learned new things. Stop by Eastwick Neighborhood Library and check one out!
