November 2017 Early Literacy Calendar

By Sarah S. RSS Wed, November 1, 2017

This month, we are celebrating Native American Heritage Month, and the unique contributions to children’s books made by Native/First Nations authors and illustrators.

When you were little, do you remember the happiness you felt while smelling fresh bread? When seeing the face of someone you love? When dancing or playing a drum? All these sensations, and more, are captured in a lovely book for young children, My Heart Fills With Happiness. Author Monique Gray Smithis of Cree, Lakota, and Scottish descent, and the book’s illustrator, Julie Flett, is a Vancouver-based artist who is Cree- Métis. We love the bright, cheerful colors of this board book, and how it perfectly captures a child’s joy doing the things she loves.

This month's Early Literacy calendar and links, compiled by Free Library of Philadelphia's children's librarians, is full of great suggestions that parents and caregivers can engage in with their children to help nurture and develop necessary Early Literacy skills!
