Read by 4th is proud to announce we have been selected as a recipient of a 2018–2019 Barra Award! Our campaign joins 43 exceptional nonprofit organizations in the Greater Philadelphia region that will receive $50,000 in grant funding over two years.

Since 2013, the Barra Foundation has awarded more than $6 million to area nonprofits. These awardees represent a range of nonprofits from the Arts and Culture, Education, and Health and Human Services sectors in the region. Each year, Barra awardees are first nominated by their social-sector peers and then invited to submit an application to the Barra Foundation.

We are proud to be receiving this great honor in support of the work of a broad coalition of partner organizations that is dedicated to making sure each child within the city of Philadelphia is reading at grade level by the start of 4th grade. With the help of Mayor Kenney's administration, the School District of Philadelphia, our diverse network of nonprofit community partners, institutes of higher learning, and parents and adults across, we know every child can reach this goal.

In selecting Read by 4th for this award, the Barra Foundation has made it known that it acknowledges the campaign as an exemplary initiative in the Greater Philadelphia region that is making a difference. Read by 4th and Free Library of Philadelphia staff thanks them deeply for this recognition, and we look forward to using this award to further our collective efforts and help give our city’s children their best shot at success.

Read by 4th is a citywide campaign bringing together an ever-growing coalition of partners to double the number of children reading at grade level by the start of 4th grade. We are families, educators, city officials, school district administrators, literacy specialists, youth program providers, neighborhood merchants, faith leaders, block captains, and much more, coming together as Philadelphians to embrace our collective responsibility to give all our children their best shot at success.
