January 2018 Early Literacy Calendar

By Peter SM RSS Wed, January 3, 2018

Happy New Year! Let’s start this new year right, by singing, talking, playing, writing—and of course reading—with our little ones!

Not only did we celebrate New Year’s Day (on the first, of course), but we also commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 15. Check out the MLK Day of Service website to find a child-friendly volunteer opportunity in Philadelphia.

Need a more unique holiday to celebrate? Grab a snack on National Popcorn Day (January 19), celebrate our furry friends on Squirrel Appreciation Day (January 21)—bet you didn’t know that a group of squirrels is called a "scurry!"—and who could forget Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day (January 29)?

Grab some earplugs and make a Bubble Wrap Rug for the kids!

This month's Early Literacy calendar and links, compiled by Free Library of Philadelphia's children's librarians, is full of great suggestions that parents and caregivers can engage in with their children to help nurture and develop necessary Early Literacy skills!
