Digital Media Highlights October 2019 | Streaming Screams Just in Time for Halloween!

By Peter SM RSS Fri, October 18, 2019

At the beginning of each month, we highlight all the great new titles—books, ebooks, audiobooks, movies, and music—that have been added to our catalog and will be available to check out at your neighborhood library.

Starting with this blog post, we also plan to give you a monthly update on all the new streaming and downloadable media available through our Digital Media portal!

Being that it is October, let's take a look at some of the screamingly scary sinema that Hoopla and Kanopy have both curated for this most haunted and harrowing of seasons...

Halloween Movies for Kids

Hoopla has plenty of chilling children's videos to choose from including a number of children's book adaptations including The Halloween Tree, Click, Clack, Boo!, and Ghoulia. There are spooky series for your viewing pleasure such as R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and Sabrina The Teenage Witch. Or you can re-watch perennial favs like Spookley The Square Pumpkin and The Dog Who Saved Halloween. And before you take the kids to see the new Addams Family animated movie, they can watch the Addams Family Halloween Special to get into the haunted holiday mood.

Are Ya Scared Yet?!

Hoopla's best-of horror list this year includes everything from cult classics to modern mayhem. Definitive movies include the silent film-era version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, schlockmeister William Castle's House on Haunted Hill, and father-of-the-modern-zombie George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Recent releases such as the '80s suspense thriller nostalgia of Summer of 84 and the horror anthology of Nightmare Cinema keep the frightening flames of film alive. Want to delve deeper into the digital dungeon of Hoopla's library? They have close to 900 movies in the horror genre alone!

If you like some laughs with your scares, there are over 40 episodes of MST3K currently available on Hoopla! Some of my personal favs are The Creeping Terror, Mad Monster, The Undead, and The Horror of Party Beach, but you really can't go wrong with any movie that has puppet robots (or is it robot puppets?) joking and quipping through these more-silly-than-scary flicks.
