The Free Library of Philadelphia is a great place to learn and practice English. If your English classes have been affected by closures related to COVID-19, there are library resources available online to help you continue your learning from home. To access these tools, you’ll need your Free Library card number and PIN to log on.

Sign-up for Mango Languages
Mango Languages is a fantastic online resource for language learning that you can access for free with your library card. You can access this program at home on a personal computer, or download the app (iOS and Android) for your phone. Mango Languages offers online English language practice with instructions in 21 different languages!

Check out an English Language Learning ebook
You can access hundreds of ebooks to help you learn and practice English without ever leaving your home. These books can be downloaded onto tablets, e-readers, and smartphones,  or read on your personal computer.

Take an Online English Language Learning Course
You can improve your English speaking, reading, writing, and grammar skills by taking an English class online through Universal Class. Try Basic English Speaking Skills, ABCs of English Grammar, or Vocabulary Building, while receiving feedback on graded assignments from your online professor.

Work with an Online English Tutor
Are you studying English on your own and finding yourself stuck on a particular topic? Visit Tutor.com to get one-on-one support in English Language Use and Types of Writing. When you select Topic: English as a Second Language and Grade: Adult, you will be matched with a tutor who has expertise in adult English language learning and can answer questions about grammar and writing in English. With Tutor.com, you can chat through typing or use your phone or computer voice chat.

Watch a Movie (with the subtitles on – in English!)
You can access streaming movies online through Hoopla and Kanopy. Try alternating between watching with English subtitles on and then really testing your comprehension with the subtitles off.

Listen to an Audiobook
Listening to a book read aloud (either on a computer, tablet, or smartphone) can help increase English proficiency. You can access audiobooks online with your Free Library card through Overdrive/Libby, RB Digital, and Hoopla. Try checking out the same book in audio and ebook formats so you can read along for extra practice!
