Happy National Library Week!

By Kate C. RSS Mon, April 5, 2021

It’s one of our favorite weeks of the year—National Library Week

Founded in 1958, this annual celebration is a time to reflect on the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians, and the role they play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. It’s also a time to collectively promote library use and support. As you can imagine, it's music to our ears!

This year's theme is "Welcome to Your Library," reminding us that libraries extend far beyond the four walls of our buildings, as many of us learned over the past year throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, libraries like ours have tried their best to go above and beyond to adapt to our changing world by expanding resources and continuing to meet the needs of their communities. Whether patrons visit in person or virtually, libraries offer opportunities for everyone to explore new worlds and become their best selves through access to technology, multimedia content, and educational programs.

Later today, the American Library Association (ALA) will officially kick off the week by releasing the State of America’s Libraries Report, which will include the Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books of 2020 – stay tuned for that, as we'll share it on our social media channels as soon as it's available!

Are you looking to join the National Library Week festivities? Here are a few ways you can get involved:

  • Visit your library! Whether in person or virtually (services vary, so check before you go!), we hope you'll use this week to take advantage of all we have to offer. And of course, if you don't have a library card, what better time to get one?

  • Participate in the #MyLibraryIs promotion on social media. Post to Instagram, Twitter, or on the I Love Libraries Facebook page about an ebook or audiobook; virtual storytime or program; or any example of how your library has made a difference while you've been social distancing at home! Use the hashtag and tag us at @FreeLibrary! The ALA will gather the entries, and one randomly selected winner will receive a $100 Visa gift card! The promotion ends Saturday, April 10 at 1:00 p.m. EDT.

  • Support your library! This is a great time to make a gift to the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation, which supports many of our vital programs that enhance literacy, guide learning, and inspire curiosity throughout our region. Learn more!

Stay tuned to our blog and our social media channels all week long as we celebrate National Library Workers Day (April 6), as well as National Library Outreach Day and Library Giving Day (April 7), with a focus on the virtual services and digital content we’re bringing to Philadelphians until we can safely gather in person again!
