This past Saturday the University of Pennsylvania's Arthur Ross Gallery opened its new show, Treasured Pages: Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts from the Free Library of Philadelphia , which will be on view through January 6, 2008. The exhibition features both codices and single leaves on loan from the Free Library's Rare Book Department--whose medieval manuscript collection can be explored electronically here --and addresses themes of ritual and devotion, learning and leisure, and politics and law. Located at 220 South 34th Street, the Arthur Ross Gallery is free and open to the public--click here for hours. There will also be a symposium held on Friday, November 2, entitled The Treasured Hunt: Collecting Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts, Past, Present, and Future, presented by the University of Pennsylvania in collaboration with the Free Library. Click here for details. There is no cost for attendance, but pre-registration is required.
