How is an artists' book made?

Ever wonder how a book is made, outside of the huge factory production of regular publishing? This video by Abigail Uhteg, a 2007 graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, shows how. She had an artists' book residency at the Women's Studio Workshop (Rosendale, NY) this summer and produced a small edition (35 copies) of a book with etchings, letterpress, and handmade paper. While printing and binding the book, she took 3,000 photos of the process and made them into a video.

There will be an exhibition of artists' books created at Women's Studio Workshop in the 2nd floor Art and Print Galleries at Parkway Central,  from January 19 through February 24, 2010.

This is a great video. I love that the library has highlighted bookmaking as an art! The physical beauty of books like Abigail's is something that won't ever be replaced by digital technology

That's a fantastic video. Takes me back to my university days of self . Such a long process for 35 books, but I'd take a copy over a mass produced lifeless print anyday.

Modern book production came about as a result of the invention of printing press. Although the invention of printing most likely occurred earlier in China as well, the introduction of movable type and the printing press to Europe is credited to Johann Gutenberg of Germany. How a book is made @
