Comix Club: Unfolding Comics with Kit Fraser
Art Department at Parkway Central Library
This special meeting of Comix Club will feature a hands-on accordion comics workshop taught by Kit Fraser.
In this workshop we'll learn to tell our stories through the form of an accordion book. An accordion style book gives us the unique opportunity to unfold our drawings and words in a continuous line, growing the story as we go along, but always keeping the previous pages in sight.
We will learn how to craft a simple accordion book using concertina binding. Participants may come prepared with a story idea, but we will also do a short, guided writing session to get some ideas flowing and make best use of the accordion book style. No experience with comics or bookmaking is necessary. Supplies will be provided but bring your own favorite paper and drawing tools of your choice if you'd like.
Kit Fraser (she/her) is a cartoonist and illustrator, living and drawing in New York. Some of her work can be seen in The New Yorker, The Nib, and various other online and in-print publications and anthologies. She holds a MFA from California College of the Arts and has taught art and storytelling at the Museum of Modern Art, Sequential Artists Workshop, California College of the Arts, as well as local libraries. To learn more about Kit, visit www.kitfraser.com or connect on Instagram: @kitcadoodle
Anyone age 18+ is welcome to stop by to read or draw comics during Comix Club whether they are taking part in the workshop or not. We'll be providing some blank paneled pages and other drawing supplies. We are also gathering comics made during these meetings for a future Comix Club zine. If you are a Philadelphia-based artist with a comic of your own, or have any local comics you’d like to donate to this collection, feel free to bring them to our meet-ups!
The Philadelphia Comics Collection is also available to read in the library any time we are open! This collection contains work by local comics artists and publishers. Please be aware that the content of many of these comics is mature and graphic in nature, and so we ask that its readers be 18 and up.
Comix Club usually meets once a month in the Art Department, on Parkway Central Library's 2nd floor.
