Rising Giant: An Introduction to the People & Culture of Brazil
Virtual
Brazil is one of the most fascinating and complex societies in the world. It features 13 racial categories that help define Brazilian identity, making issues of race and class particularly significant in this vast Portuguese-speaking nation. Notably, Brazil was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery. A pressing challenge for Brazil is the growing disparity between economic classes, which raises important questions about economic justice. In recent decades, the government has made substantial progress in lifting large numbers of people out of poverty and into the middle class. As the home of the world's most important rainforest, Brazil is also at the forefront of efforts to protect biodiversity and manage climate.
Our guest expert for this program is Brazilian historian Ms. Augusta da Silveira de Oliveira, who is pursuing her PhD at Brown University in Providence.
