Additional Title: Book of Hours, use of Paris
Rare Book Department
This miniature begins Prime of the Hours of the Virgin. This very luxurious book of hours was written in blue ink and gold in France in the early fifteenth century. Its decoration was left incomplete, however, until the end of the century when it was finished in Italy by two Italian illuminators, the Neapolitan Cristoforo Majorana (active ca. 1480-94) and another artist whose work is close to the Master of the della Rovere Missals (active ca. 1475-1505), an anonymous master active in Italy and France. This miniature is by Majorana.
