Image taken by Philadelphia Evening Bulletin photographer Charles T. Higgins.
While the Mummers parades date back to Philadelphia’s earliest days, the official parade began in 1901. In this 1938 image, a Mummer costumed as "Uncle Sam" carries a sign, which appears to be referring to Japan's unapologetic aggression against the Republic of China, and the Japanese occupation of China's then-capital Nanjing in December 1937.
Notes on the negative's envelope read: “Jan. 1938, New Years Parade”
