While the Mummers New Year's parades date back to Philadelphia’s earliest days, the official parade began in 1901.  In this 1938 image, a parade float is being used to protest the rising cost of gas.  It is  manned by Mummers, costumed to represent the groups of consumers affected by the price hike.
