Image taken by Philadelphia Evening Bulletin photographer Charles T. Higgins.
While the Mummers New Year's parades date back to Philadelphia’s earliest days, the official parade began in 1901. In this 1938 image, specators can be seen from behind, lined up along the sidewalk, standing on baskets and crates provided by the city, to get a better view of the parade.
