While the Mummers New Year's parades date back to Philadelphia’s earliest days, the official parade began in 1901. In this 1938 image, a Mummers float depicts a battlefield scene, and the banner above states, "We Want No More of This." With war brewing again in Europe, many Americans opposed getting involved in another world war.
