Among the many area observances of Armistice Day in the greater Philadelphia area, this 1931 City celebration began with military participants assembled on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway; they paraded on foot or horseback to Independence Square (via Penn Square), passed a reviewing stand there, then proceeded to Independence Hall for speeches by military and government dignitaries.
Note: Armistice Day was originally celebrated after WWI, to commemorate the signing of the ceasefire agreement with Germany and to honor the veterans who served or died in the war. In 1954, the holiday was changed to Veterans Day, honoring all American veterans of foreign wars.
