Image taken by Philadelphia Evening Bulletin photographer Charles T. Higgins. Notes on the negative's envelope read: "The Italian Statue Sea Horses, June 1928"
This June 1928 image shows a closeup of the Fountain of the Sea Horses, located behind the Art Museum of Philadelphia (seen in the background). It is also referred to as The Italian Fountain. Given to Philadelphia by Italy in 1926, to commemorate America's sequicentennial, it is made of travertine (a type of limestone) and features four horses set in a shallow bowl clock. The sculpture did not fare well over the ensuing decades, and finally underwent an extensive restoration in 2012-2013.
