This 1953 aerial view shows part of the Schuylkill Expressway (Interstate 76) under construction.  The expressway was constructed in stages, from 1949 to 1959. The section of the expressway seen in this image, looking southeast, is bordered by the three Presidential Aparment buildings (today, called Presidential City) just south of City Avenue, the frieght train lines skirting the Schuylkill River, City Avenue crossing the river, parts of West Fairmount Park, and the expressway's apparently-completed City Avenue interchange.
