This 1953 aerial view shows the Schuylkill River, winding through East and West Fairmount Park. Top of the photograph shows West Philadelphia. Lower right shows the three Presidential Aparment buildings (today, called Presidential City), with City Avenue running diagonally and across the river. Bottom center shows the Schuylkill Falls Housing Project under construction (opened in 1954, demolished in 1996). The Schuylkill Expressway, at various stages of construction, is seen skirting the Schuylkill River. The expressway was constructed over 10 years, from 1949 to 1959.
