This 1953 image shows an aerial view of the corner of 34th & Spruce Streets, at the University of Pennsylvania. The Gates Pavilion (named for Thomas Sovereign Gates, banker and first president of UPenn in 1930) is part of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). The hospital is the prominent building in the center of the photograph, facing Spruce Street. Across the street is Houston Hall; to the left of Houston Hall is Irvine Auditorium; along the left edge are bleachers at Franklin Field; and at the top, between the bleachers and the hospital, is the Penn Museum.
