OPTICAL ILLUSION

NORTH CAROLINA - To the eye untrained in mountain driving, this section of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina seems to slope down to the distant curve, where it starts climbing. Actually, the car is climbing on a fairly steep grade. Such optical illusions are frequent in the mountains, where unstable horizons trick drivers unless there are buildings in sight to provide balance.
