"This mansion at 244 South 3rd Street was the home of Samuel Powel, mayor of Philadelphia at the time of the Revolution. Now a fully furnished museum with a Colonial-style garden, it was once threatened with demolition. Built in 1765, it is one of the finest Colonial houses in the city."--OPEP, p. 51.
