Notes: "Originally the home of Matthew Newkirk, railroad executive, this splendid house was built by the famous architect Thomas U. Walter in 1850s. In 1876 it became headquarters of the Society of the Sons of St. George, organized in 1772 to assist Englishmen in distress in America. The building was sold again in 1901, when the Society moved to Arch Street at 19th, and was taken down soon after. The elegant old marble mansion once dominated an area of charming Victorian row houses, which themselves were displaced many years ago by stores and other buildings standing opposite the present Trailways Bus Terminal."--OPEP, p. 106.
Notes: The building on the corner. Trolley tracks on street, street lamps on sidewalk. Sculpture of St. George on horseback killing dragon on top of frieze.
