Notes: "In the 1800s commerce and industry were in continuous competition with private property owners for space in areas such as the one shown here. This photograph shows that businesses have taken over the ground floors of the buildings nearer the center of the block which were once private residences. Competition on another level altogether is detectable in the advertisements of the Pennsylvania Central's ticket office, which proclaim a new route to Baltimore, Washington and points south."--OPEP, p. 135.
Notes: Several businesses occupying row houses. Awnings stretched over sidewalk. In the foreground is a man leaning against a pole. Firms include: "Ticket office. Pennsylvania Central Rail Ro[ad]" ; "T.H. Baxter Fancy Case Maker. 901 Chestnut St." ; "Ticket office for the Pennsylvania air line. New route to Baltimore, Washington and the South Atlantic states." ; "Mason & Co." ; "Engravers & stationers" ; "Thomas Griffiths" ; "Shirts, collars, gloves & hoisery &c" ; "Richelderfer's."
