Devonshire Terrace I Eighteenth April 1843
My Dear DeGex
In the last piece I saw at the Victoria, a murdering Brigand (of high moral sentiments) was urged by another murdering Brigand (of low moral sentiments) to slaughter a child, whom it was indispensable to the plot of the play - but not otherwise - to murder. After a severe moral struggle, he said "I'll do it!" - whereat the audience were very much delighted, and applauded hugely; though I couldn't tell exactly why. I repeat the Brigand's sentiment; and I hope my audience may be in the same humour.
Faithfully Yours always
