Detroit--Highlights of Cadillacs refined impact resisting bumper system are shown in these photos (upper left). Protection of the front end sheet metal, lights and other components has been significantly improved. Front bumper impact capability has been increased to withstand a five mile-an-hour car-to-car impact. This was accomplished by moving the front bumper 3/4inch forward to provide for more deflection distance to the sheet metal, and redesigned bumper reinforcements and hangar brackets to accept higher loads. Front bumper guards are standard on all models and provide a good match with most domestic cars on the road today. Rubber impact strips, standard on bumper guards and optional across the full width of the bumper bar face, provide protection.
(Lower left) In the rear of standard models an optional rubber impact strip also extends the full width of the bumper bar face. Impact capability in the rear has been increased to a 3 1/4 mile car-to-car situation. Cadillac in 1972 will continue the use of special SAE 945.110 inch thick alloy high strength bumper steel for most of its bumper components.
(Right) Rubber impact strips are available on the vertical ends of the Eldorado rear bumper for added protecion.
