Tavistock House
Seventeenth March 1854
My Dear Clement. He had bought his own tomb sometime before. He had a particular fondness for the spot, which is in the Norwood Cemetery. I was to have appointed a day to walk with him and see it, but thought – God help us all! – that there was time enough.
You know what an extraordinary house it is – not less so under these circumstances than under any other – but more so. I only know accidentally, that he is to be buried on Monday. The hour has not come to my knowledge, but if you decide to make the journey here, I can of course ascertain it.
If you come, pray stay with us. Send me a telegraph message, mentioning, in that case, by what Train you come. You will find us quite alone.
Very faithfully Yours Ever
